Alumni Profile: Billy Arnold

Billy ArnoldAlthough Billy Arnold was with the Raiders for a short time (1989-1990) his impact and memory still remains. You see, Billy was the consummate teammate, always upbeat, always working hard, and always supporting his teammates. When Billy came to the Raiders he had some very big shoes to fill. Billy’s dad, Bill, was a standout end for the Raiders in the 1960’s and Billy was able to fill those shoes admirably. Bill Sr. entered the Racine Raiders Hall of Fame in 2014.

Billy’s football career started at Gilmore Junior High School in 9th grade. He went to Horlick the next three years, graduating in 1982. Billy played running back all three years earning All-County, All-Conference, and All-Milwaukee Area honors, as well as Honorable Mention to the All-State team his senior season.

Billy still holds the Horlick single season rushing record, a record still standing after 33 years. Billy went on the play collegiately at Missouri West State University as a walk-on for a year before deciding to return to Racine.

In 1989, Billy joined the Raiders as a running back and played until 1990 when he decide to serve his country and entered the Air Force in 1991. One of Billy’s most memorable moments with the Raiders came after the 1989 World Championship victory over the Ottawa Bootleggers in Canada. After being
treated poorly by the Canadian fans, Billy and his Raiders teammates carried the American flag all over the ice-laden and snow-covered field.

Billy met his wife Kim while in the Air Force. Billy and Kim got married then moved back to Racine. In 1994, Billy and Kim’s son Will was born. Following in his father’s footsteps, Will became a standout athlete in his own right as a cross country runner at Horlick.

In 2014, Billy started the Racine Youth Sports (RYS) Running Club to help promote and support cross country running. The club currently has 54 kids participating.

The Racine Raiders are honored to have had Billy as a player and current Alumni member and we want to thank him for giving back to our community, especially our youth with his involvement with the RYS Running Club.
