Blacktop Crew Member David Graf

Blacktop Crew Member David GrafThere are two underlying thoughts that those that volunteer with the Raiders have. The first is once a Raider, always a Raider. The second is the Raiders are like family. That is especially true with David Graf. Not just as an expression, but in reality.

Back in 2003, one time Raiders volunteer Anna Marie Smetana approached Graf and got him involved with the club. He was with the Raiders for four years. With other commitments going on at the time, he had to leave. Sixteen years later, he was again approached, this time by Raiders board member Jen DeMarco. She told Graf that the Raiders really needed help with the black top crew. It’s really hard to say no to your own sister, so Graf rejoined the Raiders this year.

“It takes a lot of people to run a football team,” wisely states Graf. “Especially on game day where everything needs to get set up.”

As part of the blacktop crew, Graf helps get everything ready for the game. The job involves setting up the pop-up tents, stocking the refreshment kiosks around Historic Horlick Athletic Field, getting tables set up for the 50/50 raffle and R.J. Kids’ Club, and helping to bring out the tunnel the team runs through before the game.

Graf does it all for no pay and a nominal reward.

“I get to watch the game,” he says.

Getting things set up and stocked runs in line with what Graf does for work. He works at Rogan’s Shoes where his job is to make sure all of their stores remain stocked.

Graf enjoys working with the Racine Raiders.

“It’s a good team to work for and all the people help each other out,” Graf said.

Besides fielding a good football team, he likes how the Raiders are involved in and give back to the community, citing the scholarships that were recently given out. Graf was glad to help his sister out by coming back to the Raiders. If able, he plans to be back next year.
