Equipment Team Member: Robert Despins
- Updated: August 25, 2016
Despins is in his second year as an equipment volunteer. He started out like many of the other volunteers.
“I would go watch the team practice on Wednesday nights,” he recalled. “After awhile, Mike Dillon came up to me and asked me if I would like to help out. I was really surprised because I didn’t know Mike before that night.”
Despins remembers his first job was taking water out to the players during the practice breaks.
“As I got used to things, I started doing more,” said Despins. Part of his job is still water, but he also helps out setting up the equipment for practice and getting the needed gear out to the field on game nights.
Despins notes that his time with the Raiders organization thus far has been fun.
“I was a little nervous at first, but the people are really nice and made me feel at home,” he said.
Despins noted that everyone took the time to show him the ropes and that he feels right at home and fits in doing his job.
He says he likes “the road trips; going to the different stadiums with the players and staff is really fun.”
Despins lives in Racine and is employed at Lakeview Pharmacy. He has been there for 20 years doing a number of jobs including maintenance and stocking.
Despins said he has enjoyed the past two years with the Raiders and plans to continue with the club.
“I will be here as long as they need me and as long as I keep on liking it,” he says.
From the smile on his face, that might be a very long time.
