FLASHBACK: 1964 – Raiders may play at Soldier Field in Chicago

(NOTE: This article originally appeared in the May 19, 1964, edition of the Racine Journal Times.)

FlashbackThe Racine Raiders have a good chance of playing their second game of the Central States Football season in cavernous Soldier Field.

There won’t be 100,000 jamming the place for the Friday, Sept. 11 game, but Chicago stockbroker Bob Nussbaum, who controls the Chicago Panthers, indicates that 10,000 tickets is a goal he may reach.

The schedule has not been arranged as yet. However, such teams as Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Madison are not interested in playing a Friday night game that far from home. That leaves the Raiders as the likely choice to play the Chicagoans.

In another announcement before the club’s board of directors meeting Monday night, coach Harry Gilbert said that practice sessions at Horiick Field will begin Aug. 2.
