Game On, Saturday!

Racine Raiders vs. Chicago Falcons on July 6, 2019.The Racine Raiders annual Independence Day weekend game was in jeopardy earlier this week. After attempting to get in touch with their original opponent, the Dayton Hornets, for days with no response, the Hornets finally told the Raiders organization via a Facebook message on Tuesday afternoon that they wouldn’t be making the trip. The Hornets provided no reason for breaking their commitment to come to Racine.

This left the Raiders and their fans with the prospect of no game on Saturday, July 6. The annual Independence Day weekend game has become a tradition for many Racine residents and their families that travel from long distances to be in town for one of the greatest parades in the country. The Raiders front office staff immediately contacted dozens of teams in the area and one organization was able to get their team together in time to save the day. The Chicago Falcons, who have been around since 1990 and are organized as a non-profit, stepped up. The Falcons are no stranger to Historic Horlick Athletic Field and Raiders fans.

The Raiders faced the prospect of having to cancel a second home game this year. Their initial home opener, scheduled for June 1, was canceled when the Chillicothe Swarm were unable to make the trip due to catastrophic flooding in and around their town. Meanwhile, it appears the Dayton Hornets were too scared to make the trip to Racine after seeing what the Raiders have done to their four prior opponents.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Historic Horlick Athletic Field. The Raiders will honor veterans and active duty military and reserve personnel during the game. There will be a special ceremony at halftime honoring the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima along with many other special activities for fans. In addition, the Racine Raiders Dance and Stunt Team is hosting a cheer clinic prior to the game and the participants in the clinic will perform the routine they learned at halftime.
