Raiders begin Mid-States Football League title quest Saturday

Springfield Foxes at Racine RaidersThe Racine Raiders (2-0) begin their quest for their second Mid-States Football League title on Saturday night against the Springfield Foxes (1-1) at 7 p.m. at Historic Horlick Athletic Field in Racine, Wis.

The Raiders are coming off of a thrilling 26-10 win over the Fox Valley Force last week. The Force were ranked tops in the region by some poll services. For the second straight week, the Raiders’ opponent broke a big play to jump out to an early lead. Racine then handcuffed the Force and were able to do enough to get the win.

Springfield had a bye last week but beat the MidState Steel two weeks ago, 34-13. Springfield started off slowly in the game but got on track in the second half to easily dispatch the Steel. On June 21, the Foxes fell to the Chicago Cardinals of the Great Midwest Football League, 26-0. The Cardinals are undefeated on the season and have allowed just 15 points in seven games and it was the first game of the year for Springfield.

This is the second meeting between the two teams. The first meeting took place in October, 2012, in the MSFL championship game at Joliet Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Ill. Racine jumped out to a 27-point lead late in the first half but Springfield scored 28 unanswered points to take a one point lead midway through the fourth quarter. J.R. Taylor caught a short shuffle pass from Craig McClelland and rambled over 70 yards for the game-winning score with seven minutes to play. The Raiders then recovered a high snap over Drew Fendrich’s head and ran out the clock to win the MSFL title en route to the Semi-Pro BCS National Championship.

Saturday night is also Mascot Mania Night. Several mascots from area sports teams, high schools, businesses and even the Klement’s Racing Sausages will be at the game interacting with kids. They will all participate in a mascot scramble at halftime. It’s also InSinkErator Corporate Night. InSinkErator is an original sponsor of the Racine Raiders, dating all the way back to 1953.
