Raiders broadcaster Don Wadewitz after his close shave.Racine Raiders broadcaster Don Wadewitz initially balked at the idea of shaving his head during the fundraiser for Mitchell School at Castle Lanes on Saturday afternoon.

“(Raiders defensive back) Tracy Baskin came up to me and said, ‘Don, we’re raising $100 to shave you clean,'” said Wadewitz. “I told him that wasn’t happening.”

Wadewitz thought about it for a few minutes and called Baskin over to say he would do it if the players at the fundraiser could raise at least $100.

“Mitchell School meant a lot to my early development,” remembers Wadewitz who attended Mitchell for elementary and middle school. “It was a small way to give back and besides, the hair will come back, right?”

It took the players about ten minutes to raise over $100 and Wadewitz kept his word. He headed towards the makeshift barber shop being manned by members of the Racine Harley Owners Group and got his shave as onlookers used their phones to take video and photos of the event.

“It was a fun thing to do,” says Wadewitz. “It raised some money for the schools, got me a much needed haircut, and gave everyone a good laugh.”

Following the “rough cut,” Racine Raiders linebacker Deveron Davis took Wadewitz to Hair Force 1 in Racine, where Tato, Davis’ brother and a master barber, cleaned him up.

“It was definitely an interesting experience as I’ve never cut my hair like that,” reflects Wadewitz. “Tato and Deveron took good care of me but it’ll take a little while to get used to.”

The fundraiser had a goal of raising $4,000. Final figures weren’t available yet.
