The Racine Raiders held a mandatory team meeting for all players and staff on Tuesday night at Dewey’s on Main in downtown Racine. The purpose of the meeting was to go over some rules for the upcoming season, hand out two postseason awards that were unable to be given out at the team banquet, and give everyone their 2014 national championship rings.

Head coach Wilbert Kennedy announced two additional season award winners that didn’t get announced at the team banquet. Dusty Svendsen was voted offensive lineman of the year and Ardray Jarrett was named defensive lineman of the year, as voted on by the players.

The highlight of the night was the distribution of the 2014 national championship rings. Prior to distributing the rings, everyone was told not to open their ring boxes until every person in attendance had received their ring box.

Kennedy announced each player and coach and each walked to the podium to receive their ring box. Board president Matt Nelson announced each staff member individually and they each received their ring box to a chorus of applause from the players.

The night ended with some final words from Kennedy who urged the players to be aware of becoming complacent.

“The 2014 team doesn’t exist anymore,” said Kennedy. “With the (league) rule changes, it literally can’t exist. We couldn’t have the exact same team we did in 2014 if we wanted to because we’re now limited to 53 players on our roster.”

The Raiders begin practices on Saturday and will hold practices on Saturdays and Wednesdays until the season opener against the Des Moines Blaze on May 30, 2015.
