Raiders Down Destroyers

Deveron Davis tackleThe Racine Raiders spotted the Door County Destroyers a 6-0 lead, but rattled off 31 unanswered points in the second and third quarter to take a commanding 25 point lead into the fourth quarter. Door County would get their only touchdown of the game midway through the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit to 31-13, which would end up being the final.

The Raiders take over sole possession of first place in the MidStates Football League Northern Conference. They lead both Door County and the Muskego Hitmen by one game and they’ve now defeated both teams.

Door County’s defense picked off an Anthony Johnson pass on the first offensive play of the game. After Justin Baker got the Destroyers to the Raiders 3-yard line on a 14-yard run, the Racine defense stiffened and held Door County to a 20-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 11:36 to play in the first quarter.

Terrance Fitch CatchAbout eight minutes later, the Raiders offense moved into Door County territory but Johnson was picked off by A.J. Hamilton. Once again, the Raiders defense stopped Door County inside the red zone and Eric Natwick connected on a 26-yard field goal to make it 6-0. Door County would carry that lead into the second quarter.

The Racine offense was struggling to move the ball again when Johnson hit Terrance Fitch on a 46-yard completion down the Raiders sideline. The pass set the Raiders up in the Destroyers red zone and Johnson would connect with Fitch again on the drive, this time for a nine-yard touchdown. am Nisler added the extra point and gave Racine a 7-6 lead with 13:20 to play in the first half. The Raiders would never look back.

Johnson would finish off another drive with a one-yard keeper to give the Raiders a 14-6 lead at the half.

Torie Ruffin Interception ReturnThe Raiders added to their lead on another touchdown pass by Johnson, this time finding D.J. Smith in the back corner of the endzone on a 13 yard pass play. Racine led 21-6 with 9:53 to play in the third quarter.

Ross Toeller would leave no doubt of the outcome of the game on the Destroyers ensuing drive, picking off Nathan Smithson and returning it 33 yards for a score extending Racine’s lead to 28-6 with nine minutes to play in the third quarter.

The Raiders added to their lead with 3:47 to play in the third quarter on a 49-yard field goal by Hunter Breunig.

Lawerance Peters looks for room during a return.Door County scored their only touchdown of the game with 7:43 to play in the game. Andre Wilson got behind the Raiders secondary and T.J. Arndt lofted a pass that Wilson was able to haul in while in the endzone. It made the score 31-13. Door County was unable to get the ball back and the Raiders remained undefeated on the season with the win.

Anthony Johnson finished the game 19-34 for 272 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Fitch finished with 4 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. Smith had 5 grabs for 35 yards and a touchdown. Deveron Davis finished with four solo tackles, four tackle assists, a tackle for loss, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed. Daniel Kant-Hull had a breakout game with three solo tackles, three tackle assists, 1-1/2 tackles for loss, and a sack. Erick Sanders had four tackles and two passes defensed.

Racine is now ranked as high as third in some national polls after beating the Destroyers who were ranked ninth entering the game. The Raiders will now play their cross-town rivals, the Racine Threat at Historic Horlick Athletic Field. The Threat will be the home team for game.
