Travis Worthington pointingThe Racine Raiders got off to a slow start against the Milwaukee County Chargers on Saturday night at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Big plays again ignited the team as they put up 21 points in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 28-0 lead. The Raiders would take down the Chargers 35-6, behind four touchdown passes by Anthony Johnson, to improve to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in MidStates Football League play.

For the second straight week, Lawerance Peters got the Raiders started. This week it was a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown midway through the first quarter, giving Racine a 7-0 lead.

The offense extended the lead with under five minutes to play in the first half on Johnson’s first touchdown pass of the game, a 15-yarder to J.R. Taylor coming out of the backfield. The extra point sailed wide to the right but Racine’s lead was up to 13 points.

Just three minutes later, Johnson hit Terrance Fitch on a 61-yard bomb. Fitch caught the ball, shed the defender, and backed into the endzone to give Racine a 21-0 lead following a two-point conversion run by Howard Triplett.

Anthony Johnson Under CenterAdaris Anderson intercepted Shannon King on the Chargers ensuing drive, giving Racine the ball deep in Milwaukee County territory. Johnson connected with Travis Worthington on a 21-yard touchdown pass and the Raiders took a 28-0 lead into halftime.

The Chargers lone points of the game came with 11:36 to play in the third quarter. King hit Aunton Terry on a 33-yard pass. Milwaukee County couldn’t convert the extra point but did cut the Raiders lead to 28-6.

Johnson and the Raiders responded late in the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Carmelo Velasquez to give Racine a 35-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. It was the Velasquez’s first touchdown reception as a Raider.

Johnson finished 11 of 22 for 220 yards and 4 touchdowns in the game. Connor Flannery came on in relief and completed 4 of 6 passes for 52 yards.

Carmelo Velasquez returnThe Raiders running game had a hard time against Milwaukee County. Taylor led all backs with 11 carries for 37 yards. Fitch caught 2 passes for 112 yards while Velasquez had 4 catches for 48 yards. Worthington added 3 grabs for 53 yards.

Grant Lamb led all defenders with six tackles in the game. The linebacker added a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery, seeing significant playing time with two starters missing for the game. Justin Benko had five tackles in the game. Two of Benko’s tackles were on special teams where he also recovered a fumble.

The Raiders will need to finish strong on the road. They play the Muskego Hitmen on Saturday at Whitnall High School in Greenfield, Wisconsin. They then travel to play the Door County Destroyers, who trail Racine by just one game, the following week, before returning home for another meeting with the Racine Threat.
