The plat of land at the corner of High Street and North Memorial Drive has been central to sports and entertainment in Racine since 1906. Men’s and women’s baseball, softball, football, drum and bugle corps competitions, donkey baseball, traveling all-star teams, barnstorming professional teams, youth sports, traveling entertainers, community festivals, and more have been held at what is now called Historic Horlick Athletic Field. It wasn’t named after the founder of malted milk, a product that put Racine on the global map, until 1919, however.

Horlick bought the land in September, 1919, to provide a dedicated place for his football team to play. Just three years later, that team would be in the brand new National Football League and play the first game in franchise history at Horlick Athletic Field against the former Decatur Staleys who changed their name to the Chicago Bears in 1922. Horlick Athletic Field was also the home of the Racine Belles, made famous by the movie A League of Their Own.
